the phonograph

University players recently turn overed a play titled The Phonograph by Loften Mitchell. This play was first introduced in New York in 1961 and tells the fictionalisation of a teenaged African American couple, raising their family in 1930s Harlem. The family is an average family struggling to encumber themselves afloat and foreclose their children educated. It is evident they want more for their children then what they themselves had. There is a great deal of irony in this story in the midst of the characters themselves, as well as in the amicable commentary. In watching the play one of the first clownlike points I was made aware of is when the older or present day, Paulette Kellogg, comes to the level and sits down to talk ab come fore how she is now in flash of covering stories of old historic buildings in the city. The buildings are organism knocked down to make inhabit for new fancy skyscrapers. As she lists some of the buildings she says she is now responsible for writing on the close of her childhood home, her parents old flatbed building in Harlem where so much had happened in long time past. I find this wry because what she was once responsible for gird serviceing to create, she is now responsible to help destroy. This is not the only juiceless situation I prepare by viewing this play.
